Last week NFL.com did a projection of who will start for each team this season. So, considering how some of their projections seem a bit odd, I decided to take a stab at a super early prediction of the Detroit Lions 2014 Starters. First, I want to look at who I think the 2014 Detroit Lions offensive starters will be. Below is a table that shows my selections:
As you can see above, the lineup looks very similar to the 2013 starting lineup with one difference. Instead of listing a third wide receiver, I listed a fullback. The new coaching staff has been very clear that they want to utilize a fullback in the new offense. They signed Jed Collins from New Orleans and have Chad Abrams, an undrafted free agent, who is expected to compete for the fullback spot. I think the 2014 Detroit Lions offensive starters will be very similar to what I show above.
Below I took a shot at the 2014 Detroit Lions defensive starters. This was a touch more difficult to predict. The corner position will be decided by whether or not Chris Houston can return to form after surgery on his toe. The defensive end position could very well be an open competition depending on how Devin Taylor compares in practice to Jason Jones.
As shown above, I do not think Chris Houston returns to form by the start of the season. I do however think that he will be healthy after a few weeks of starting the season on the bench. He very well may start off on the PUP list this year. Due to that, I expect Mathis and Slay to start. I gave the edge at defensive end to Jason Jones, but I think there is a very real chance that Devin Taylor is the other defensive end starting by mid season.
