It looks like the Detroit Lions will be looking to replace one of their coordinators after all. They were feared to be losing defensive coordinator Teryl Austin when he went on several interviews and received a second interview in Atlanta. Fortunately for the Lions, he was not chosen and remains on staff. They will lose special teams coordinator John Bonamego though. It was announced by Hondo Carpenter that he is in talks to finalize a deal that would make him the new head coach of the Central Michigan University football program.
With his departure imminent, the team will likely move toward replacing him in the coming days. It would make sense for the team to promote a coach to that position from inside the organization with how late it is in the offseason already, but bringing in a new face to fix the return game is not out of the question. Detroit’s special teams play was poor this past season with the team finally finding a kicker after trying 3 of them throughout the season. On top of that, Sam Martin struggled late in the season against Green Bay and Dallas. With the regression of Jeremy Ross this year on top of all of that, coach Jim Caldwell may want to start fresh if he feels there is a candidate out there that he is comfortable with.
