The Detroit Lions made their first moves toward getting down to 75 by Tuesday. Today, they put TJ Jones on the PUP list, meaning that he will not count against the 53 until at least week six if they choose to activate him. They could do what they did with Chris Greenwood and put him on IR if they do not feel he is ready after week 6. They could also be thin at receiver by then and need to activate him. Either way, this was a move that we all expected. Jones has not participated since the beginning of camp when he landed wrong on his shoulder.
The Lions also waived six players today. Any of the six waived today can be practice squad eligible if they clear waivers but usually the first few to get cut are not on the team’s radar for future development. The six that got the axe today were running back Steven Miller, offensive linemen AJ Dalton and Alex Bullard, wide receiver Connor Vernon, and defensive linemen Greg Hickman and Kris Redding. None of these players were under any serious consideration to make the team although Steven Miller spent some time on the practice squad last season and could do so again this season.
With the moves the Detroit Lions made today, combined with the early release of Drayton Florence, they are now at 82 players. They need to get down to 75 by Tuesday so I expect more cuts to take place this weekend as well as Monday and Tuesday. The deadline is 4pm eastern time Tuesday.
