The Detroit Lions signed tight end Kellen Davis today. The move was not really a shock as it was reported last week that he was in for a workout. Given that Joseph Fauria and Eric Ebron have been out with injuries, and that now Brandon Pettigrew is banged up, the team likely felt that they needed to have an extra healthy tight end this week just in case Pettigrew’s injury keeps him limited. The Lions promoted Jordan Thompson from the practice squad last week as well to give them two healthy tight ends and possibly three active tight ends for the game against Atlanta.
Davis, a Michigan native and Michigan State alumni, has bounced around the league playing with both Chicago and Seattle at times. He has not been much of a receiver in his career having only 561 total yards receiving, but he is a big target that will likely help them in the red zone as well as with his blocking.
