The Detroit Lions added a tight end to their offseason competition. It was announced today that they had signed tight end David Ausberry from USC. They released safety Nathan Lindsey to make room for Ausberry. The move really has little impact on the final roster, and given the health of Joseph Fauria, who is still recovering from injuries, they likely needed another tight end for their OTAs. According to Detroit News reporter Josh Katzenstein, Ausberry is present at OTAs today.
Ausberry was drafted in the 7th round in 2011 by the Oakland Raiders. He was barely used in his three seasons there, totalling 11 catches and 120 yards in his career. The Lions are likely using this time to take an extended look at Ausberry just in case the injuries pile up at tight end like they did last season.
