The Detroit Lions signed free agent safety Taylor Mays. Mays, the former 2nd round pick out of USC, has spent time with the 49ers, Bengals and the Vikings before landing in Detroit. While Mays has no guarantee at a roster spot, he has been a decent special teams player throughout his career. While being considered a bust due to not living up to his draft status, Mays does have ideal size for a safety at 6’3 and 225lbs and had exceptional speed coming out of college, having been timed at 4.32 seconds in the forty yard dash at one point. From reading scouting reports for his various stops, it sounds as if Mays has been a fringe starter for a few teams, but just was not good enough to supplant the starter.
Realistically, if Mays can make the team, he will be solely a special teams player. He would be a backup for James Ihedigbo, but he would be behind Isa Abdul-Quddus on the depth chart.
