The Detroit Lions signed running back George Winn. Below is an excerpt from detroitlions.com giving an overview on who Winn is.
Winn, a Southfield native, rushed for 1,334 yards as a senior at Cincinnati in 2012. He went undrafted last year and spent time on the practice squads in Oakland, Pittsburgh and Dallas.
While Winn is likely just camp fodder, it is important to note that if he impresses in training camp which opens for veterans next week, he could be competing for a spot on the Detroit Lions practice squad. I would not expect to see him hit the active roster at all this year. Winn is from Michigan and likely grew up a Detroit Lions fan like Joique Bell. Bell, who also came into the league undrafted and bounced around from practice squad to practice squad, landed on Detroit’s active roster, competed for playing time, and is now expected to split reps with Reggie Bush for a second straight season as a starter. Bell is also entering the first year of a new contract he signed in the offseason which was a reward for the work he did last season. This goes to show that Winn does have a chance to impress and make a squad eventually, even if it is not this season.
The Lions released guard DJ Morrell to make room for Winn.
