The Detroit Lions have claimed wide receiver Jon Baldwin who was waived by the San Francisco 49ers this week. The news was first reported by Michael Shottey via twitter. Baldwin, a former first round pick of the Kansas City Chiefs, has been a disappointment throughout his career. He had high expectations going to the Chiefs, and when he failed to produce, he was traded to the 49ers in a swap of former first round receivers that flamed out. While he is expected to be solely a camp body at this point, he cannot be overlooked. As a former first rounder, there is obvious talent there. With Calvin Johnson and Golden Tate on the roster already, there is little pressure on him. At 6’4″ he has the size to challenge for a roster spot. Detroit’s receiving corps is not exactly strong either with second round disappointment Ryan Broyles competing for the #3 spot with former castoff Kevin Ogletree. If Baldwin can come in and learn the offense quickly, he could push for a roster spot. This situation is definitely worth a look at this point.
UPDATE: Detroit Lions waive WR Reese Wiggins to make room for Baldwin.
