2015 Week 11 Preview Detroit Lions Versus Oakland Raiders

As the Detroit Lions recover from a stunning victory over the Green Bay Packers in Wisconsin for the first time since 1991, there are some uncertainties with the team.  The team still struggles to protect the quarterback.  The Ford family hired a new team president, just two weeks after firing Tom Lewand.  The new president is a Ford family advisor, making this hire feel like sour grapes to the fans.  They also are in the middle of a scandal after word leaked that the team decided to switch radio stations from 97.1 The Ticket to WJR due to wanting to control what was said about the team on the air.  If true, that leaves a big black eye on the Lions and their public relations team could suffer as a result.  Will the team be able to shake the distractions and win at home against Oakland?

  • Detroit Lions Offensive Line vs. Oakland Raiders Defensive Line –  The Raiders are very young and talented.  This team, before the loss of Aldon Smith would have lit up Matthew Stafford.  The Lions still may have issues with Mario Edwards and Khalil Mack.  With that being said, new right tackle Michael Ola did average last week and the Lions protected Stafford for the most part.  While I do not expect perfect protection, I do think the Lions protect Stafford better this week than they did against the Chiefs.  Edge None
  • Detroit Lions Tight Ends vs. Oakland Raiders Linebackers –  The Raiders have an average linebacking corps and the Lions tight ends are average as well.  While Eric Ebron is getting better, he is not yet a difference maker. Edge None
  • Detroit Lions Wide Receivers vs. Oakland Raiders Secondary –  With the exception of Charles Woodson, the Raiders secondary is young.  Talented veteran receiver Calvin Johnson and Golden Tate should exploit them.  Woodson is the X factor though.  He is playing some of his best football at age 39.  He has 5 interceptions thus far and likely will be shadowing Johnson’s side.  Edge Lions
  • Detroit Lions Running Backs vs. Oakland Raiders Run Defense –  The Lions cannot run the ball.  The Raiders run defense is not top notch but the Lions will make them look like they are.  Edge Raiders
  • Detroit Lions Quarterbacks vs. Oakland Raiders Pass Defense –  Matthew Stafford needs to have a good game for the Lions to win.  He is more than capable of  beating a young and inexperienced secondary.  The big concern is Woodson sitting back there reading him and making plays.  He can be the difference maker.  Edge None

  • Detroit Lions Defensive Line vs. Oakland Raiders Offensive Line –  The Raiders have an average offensive line bu the Detroit defensive line really only has one difference maker in Ziggy Ansah.  He will get to the quarterback, but the rest of the line will struggle.  Edge Raiders
  • Detroit Lions Linebackers vs. Oakland Raiders Tight Ends –  The Raiders tight ends are not very good but the Lions linebackers have struggled all year anyway.  With Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree stretching the field, I expect the Raiders tight ends to get some passes. Edge None
  • Detroit Lions Secondary vs. Oakland Raiders Wide Receivers –  The Lions secondary is not very good.  They did well against Green Bay, but can they keep it up with a patchwork secondary?  Cooper and Crabtree may be too much.  Edge Raiders
  • Detroit Lions Run Defense vs. Oakland Raiders Running Backs –  The Lions run defense is not great.  The Raiders run offense is good enough to be a factor.  I expect the Lions to focus so much on the pass that the run game for Oakland is effective  Edge Raiders
  • Detroit Lions Pass Defense vs. Oakland Raiders Quarterbacks –   The Lions secondary is a mess and against any good quarterback will be a game changer.  Derek Carr is good for his experience level, but he has some growing to do.  I expect him to be good against Detroit, but I do not know if it will be good enough to make a difference in the outcome of the game. Edge None

  • Detroit Lions Special Teams vs. Oakland Raiders Special Teams –  Ameer Abdullah deserves props for that return last week.  it was a game changer.  If he can keep that up, Lions have a good edge here. Edge Lions

Lions 2  Raiders 4

Part of me thinks the Lions should win this game.  Another part of me trusts the numbers.  The Raiders are young and talented, but the Lions are too unpredictable.  After such a huge win, I expect a letdown

Detroit 24 Oakland 28
